Helpful Moving Tips

Here’s a list of moving and packing tips to make your move go smoothly:

  • Start packing early; don’t leave everything until the last minute.
  • Start with the rooms that are not needed immediately.
  • Always stack dishes facing upward when packing; do not over pack boxes.
  • Never use printed newsprint to wrap fine china; use wrapping paper.
  • Never use duct tape; clear packing tape will not peel or leave marks.
  • Clearly label boxes on tops and sides; make movers aware of the contents.
  • When you use a professional moving company, never let them pack valuables such as jewelry, family heirlooms, or other unique or priceless items. If they are lost or broken, the insured value will not match their sentimental and personal value to you. Make every attempt to pack items such as jewelry, sports memorabilia, photo albums, and other one-of-a-kind family items yourself; you should also try to move these types of items in your car, or as carry-on-luggage if size allows.
  • Don’t try to get rid of your children’s favorite things before the move – even if it makes it easier. Kids sometimes have a hard time dealing with the change of the move itself.
  • For large appliances, be sure to check your owner’s manuals to see if there are special instructions for moving.
  • As you take apart furniture and other items make sure to tape all extra parts and hardware to the main base.
  • Use only small boxes for books; they get heavy very quickly.
  • Use wardrobe boxes to make closets easier to pack; clothes can be moved right from their drawers and placed in suitcases.
  • Try to pack all electronic equipment, like stereos and computers in their original boxes, and if not available, use bubble wrap when packing these items.
  • By law, a moving company cannot transport hazardous materials such as gasoline, bottled gases and other flammables, ammunition or explosives.
  • Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box whenever possible.
  • Pack a box of essential items that you will need immediately after the move and make sure it is the last thing added to the truck and clearly labeled.
  • Always pack and unpack breakables over a padded surface.
  • Always tape boxes; don’t interlock the tops without taping them down as well, without it they are not secure enough for travelling.
  • Make your reservations for professional movers two to four weeks before your planned moving day.
  • Clean out closets, the attic, and the basement as soon as you decide it’s time to move.
  • The day before your move, defrost the fridge.
  • Make sure to get extra cash to get you through moving day, for any unexpected expenses.
  • If you are depending on friends and family to help you move, have a back-up plan if they don’t show.
  • Don’t use boxes without tops; a box without a top is impossible to stack properly and safely in the truck.
  • Use custom-designed boxes when packing fine china and clothing whenever possible.
